Warning of Higher Energy Bills

British Gas Owner Centrica Warns Of Higher Energy Bills

11 May 2012

Centrica, the owner of British Gas, has said that despite its recent cut in electricity prices, rising wholesale gas costs will make supplying energy to UK households more expensive this year.

It said gas costs would be 15% higher next winter, while other costs would add another £50 to the cost of supplying energy to the average home.

“The trend for retail energy costs therefore remains upwards,” it said. In January, British Gas announced a 5% cut in its standard electricity tariff.

Centrica said it remained on track to grow profits by 10% or more at its residential business, largely due to controlling costs. It said average household gas consumption for the four months to April was up 1% on a year earlier, while electricity consumption was down 3%.

Earlier this year, Centrica reported flat profits following a “tough” 2011, which included a 30% fall in operating profits at British Gas to £522m.

Energy Firms – Summary

I am delighted to see that Energy Suppliers must now let their domestic customers know what their best deal is, note:

  • This only applies to domestic energy customers.
  • It is claimed that 7 out of 10 of customers are on the wrong energy tariff and pay too much.
  • The crazy thing is, customers rarely switch when they could save up to £100 per year.
  • Advice is that, despite the new measure, you should still shop around.

For domestic customers wanting to switch energy suppliers you may like to watch the following French and Saunders Video:

Energy Firms To ‘Guarantee Best Deal’ On Tariffs

11 April 2012

Energy companies will be required to let customers know what their best deal is, in a move which ministers say could save households up to £100 a year.

Firms will be obliged to tell people about the most suitable tariff for them and to offer it if they request it.

Announcing the move, Deputy PM Nick Clegg will say seven out of 10 people have the wrong deal and pay too much.

Labour have accused energy firms of “ripping off” people and said there must be more competition in the market.

Environmental campaigners have dismissed the initiative – to be announced by Mr Clegg in a speech in London – as “tinkering” and are calling for far-reaching changes to how energy is produced and consumed.

Most customers saw increases of between 15% and 18% in their gas bills in the autumn, while electricity bills also rose sharply, a move energy firms blamed on rising wholesale energy costs.

Leading firms cut their prices earlier this year – reflecting what they said was a dip in commodity prices and the mild winter – but not by enough to compensate for the earlier rise.

Ministers have been under pressure to do more to help people with the squeeze on their living standards caused by pay freezes, tax rises and above-inflation increases in energy, fuel and transport costs.

‘Landmark deal’

Following talks with the UK’s six biggest suppliers, Mr Clegg is expected to say the government has secured a “landmark deal” under which customers will be guaranteed an offer of the best tariff open to them depending on their needs and energy use.

The companies concerned – British Gas, E.On, NPower, Scottish and Southern Energy, EDF and Scottish Power – will have to tell their customers once a year what their best deal is.

“Right now, seven out of 10 customers are on the wrong tariff for their needs so are paying too much,” Mr Clegg is expected to say.

“Yet people rarely switch, despite the fact some families could save up to £100 a year. As of this autumn, your supplier will have to contact you with the best tariff for your needs – and if you call them, they’ll have to offer you the best deal too.”

The guarantee is expected to apply only to tariffs offered by a customer’s existing supplier and people will still have to “shop around” if they want to try to find a cheaper deal with another provider. Ministers have told firms to simplify their tariff structures and billing details to encourage people to look around.

Consumer Focus said the move was a “welcome first step”, as customers coming to the end of a fixed-term contract would be able to move on to the cheapest deal rather than the more expensive standard rate.

“That is long overdue,” said the organisation’s director of energy Audrey Gallagher. “But this is probably only going to work if this is part of a much wider strategy to really help people engage more effectively with their energy bills, really cut their costs and get the best out of the energy market.”

There was an onus on customers to shop around for the best deal and to think more carefully about how they conserved energy, she added.

Labour have called for the cheapest tariffs to be guaranteed for the over-75s and said firms should be forced to sell energy to new providers, such as retailers, to open up the market.

“Six months ago, at the energy summit, Labour called on the government to get tough with the energy giants – but all ministers could do was get the energy companies to write to their customers telling them to shop around,” said shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint.

“Our energy market needs a complete overhaul, but this government is only fiddling at the margins.”

Green champion’

Greenpeace said any move to bring down bills was “good news” for thousands of households but it did not go far enough.

“It is good to see Nick Clegg taking an interest in the plight of people who are feeling the pinch,” said the pressure group’s head of energy, Jim Footner.

“But tinkering around the fringes of the overly gas-dependent energy sector simply won’t be enough.

“If Nick Clegg wants the Lib Dems to be seen as a green champion, and a friend of the billpayer, then he is has got to take on the Big Six energy companies by reforming the industry. He has got to make sure that we become far less reliant on expensive, imported gas while also backing cutting-edge, home-grown renewable energy.”

Christine McGourty from Energy UK, which represents energy companies, said consumers needed to shop around to get the best deal.

She added: “There are many different ways people can manage their energy bills, whether by changing tariff, method of payment or installing energy saving measures such as insulation.”

Energy regulator Ofgem has accused the largest six firms of having a “stranglehold” on the market but they say competition is the strongest in Europe.

During day to day business I get asked several questions when providing quotes for gas and electricity to my business customers.  The following information answers many if not all of those questions.

For all my clients and potential customers here is the content of Factsheet 104 (21.07.11) from Ofgem.  Please take the time to read it, it might just save you a lot of grief and more importantly, money!

Understanding your contract is vital if you want to be in control of your energy bills. The hints and tips below are relevant to all businesses and are based on current energy market rules. Following our latest investigation into the retail market we are also looking at whether further protection is required for businesses.

Make sure you have a copy of your contract

If you are a micro business* customer, rules introduced by energy regulator Ofgem mean that your supplier has to send you a copy of the contract terms and conditions after you have agreed a new deal. If your company is larger than a micro business, Ofgem still expects your supplier to ensure that you
can see a copy of the terms and conditions. When you receive a copy of your contract make sure you read it through carefully. Also make sure you read through all the bills, letters and other important information which your supplier sends you.

Know the dates of your contract

Making sure you know when your contract begins and ends is vital. In particular you should note down when the notice period is for deciding if you want to switch or stay with your supplier. If you do not have this information to hand contact your supplier.
* You can be defined as a micro-business for just gas, just electricity, or for both. The gas or electricity must be supplied on non-domestic premises and you must meet at least one of the following three criteria:

  • Consumes not more than 55,000 kWh of electricity a year
  • Consumes not more than 200,000 kWh of gas a year
  • Has fewer than ten employees (or their full-time equivalent) and also has an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total not exceeding €2m (will qualify as a micro-business for gas and/or electricity)

Note the difference between the renewal period and the notice period on a
fixed-term contract

Understand what will happen if you don’t switch or sign a new fixed term deal.  Many household contracts allow you to easily switch supplier at any point during the year, provided you give a short notice period. But don’t assume that the contract for your business has the same terms and conditions, as many businesses are on fixed term offers. Make sure you know exactly when the window is for notifying your supplier that you wish to sign a new deal, or that you want to switch at the end of the contract.

If you are a micro business customer, your supplier will contact you setting out the details of its new fixed-term offer at least 60 days before the end of your contract. Once you receive this letter you will have at least 30 days to contact your supplier and let it know:

  • If you want to sign up to its new offer, or
  • If you want to switch to a new supplier once your deal ends.

Remember that you may still have to give a notice period at the end of your contract if you want to switch.

If your company is larger than a micro business, there are no rules set by Ofgem for when a supplier will notify you of your options once a fixed-term deal expires. You will need to check your contract or contact your supplier for further information.
If you switched supplier before you started your current deal, don’t assume that notice and renewal periods with your new supplier will be the same as with your previous one. If you do not have information on your renewal and notice periods ask your supplier to provide it.

Understand what will happen if you don’t switch or sign a new fixed term deal

When you receive your renewal letter make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions. It will set out what will happen if you don’t contact your supplier to sign up to their offer, negotiate a new deal, or tell them you want to switch.

If you are a micro business your supplier could roll over your contract for a maximum of one year. It could also increase the rates or change the terms.

If your company is larger than a micro business you will need to check what your contract says about renewals – as your supplier may be able to roll over your contract for longer than one year.

It is never too early to think about what you want to do when your current contract ends. If your contract does run out, your current supplier will still provide your energy until you switch but you may be subject to a deemed or out of contract rate which could be much higher than your current contract.

This applies both to micro and larger businesses so you will need to check the terms and conditions of your contract to see how this applies to you.

I hope you found that useful?  If I can help you comply with the above (I do this for all my clients)…

Complicated Energy Tariffs

Which recently investigated complicated Energy Tariffs, their findings speak for themselves, let me know your views, why should finding the best deals in gas and electricity be so difficult?

A group were asked to idenitify what they pay on standard tariffs from Eon, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and British Gas.  They used the companies’ own websites to find the tariffs and rates but could use pen, paper, spreadshets and calculators to work out the answers.

According to Which “Only one of the 36 – a company director – could do it.  And a maths expert we consulted told us that even A-Level mathematics students would struggle to work it out.

Perhaps for the rest of us mere mortals a much less complicated energy tariff would be appreciated.

Here at Utilitrack I have a team behind me to see through complicated energy tariffs.  Email me if I can help pl4energy@gmail.com.

Gas & Electricity – Resistance to Change Supplier

On the front page of The Times Newspaper last weekend it highlighted that MOST people complain about the cost of Gas and Electricity, complain about the suppliers they are using, complain about customer care…and do what?  Nothing, absolutely nothing!  We are strange creatures, why don’t we ‘shop around‘ for the best prices, at least check if you we are on a good rate?  Perhaps it’s lack of time or simply too much effort.  We all have reasons but probably no excuses  - I did a little research about our resistance to change and found this great video.

Very funny – ‘Resistance to Change’ – hope you like it as much as I do!

On all those fronts, if you own a business, why not let me shop around for you.  All I need is a copy of your bills and a couple of signatures and I go looking for the best deals.  Interested email me pl4energy@gmail.com or call 0800 7811905.
